Free… But Still Carrying It

Introduction
June is a month that carries the word freedom.
Juneteenth reminds us of a historical truth many people know intellectually but few fully reflect on emotionally:
Just because freedom was declared…doesn’t mean everyone immediately experienced it.
And honestly?
That truth extends far beyond history.
Because many women today are technically free…but still emotionally carrying survival patterns that were never meant to become permanent identities.
We’ve mastered survival. We’ve learned how to push through. How to keep going.
How to hold everything together.
But somewhere along the way, many of us stopped asking ourselves an important question:
Am I truly free… or just functioning?
Survival Isn’t the Same as Freedom
For generations, many women—especially Black women—have been taught that survival is strength.
Be strong. Handle it. Push through. Don’t complain. Take care of everybody else first. And while those lessons may have helped previous generations survive difficult circumstances, many of us inherited survival patterns we were never taught to question.
Patterns like:
Hyper-independence
Emotional suppression
Overworking
Caretaking without rest
Feeling guilty for choosing ourselves
Believing exhaustion is normal
We learned how to survive environments that required strength.
But survival and freedom are not the same thing.

Strong Women Carry Things Quietly
One thing I’ve learned over the past year is this:
Strong women don’t always fall apart publicly.Sometimes they just carry more privately.
And eventually, carrying becomes identity.
You don’t even realize how much emotional weight you’ve normalized until life slows down long enough for you to notice how tired you really are.
Not just physically.
Emotionally.
Mentally.
Spiritually.
There’s a difference between being productive and being free.
What Are You Still Carrying?
This month, I’ve been reflecting deeply on what freedom truly looks like for me.
Not performative freedom. Not social media freedom.Real freedom.
The kind that allows you to:
Rest without guilt
Say no without explanation
Release relationships that no longer align
Stop over-functioning for people who refuse to grow
Choose peace over performance
Heal without apologizing for the process
Because truthfully, some of us are still carrying:
Old survival habits
Old fears
Old grief
Old expectations
Old versions of ourselves
And we’re calling it responsibility.

Freedom Requires Release
One of the hardest things about healing is realizing that freedom often requires letting go of what once helped you survive.
That can feel uncomfortable.
Because survival patterns become familiar. And familiar things feel safe—even when they’re heavy.
But freedom asks different questions:
What do I no longer have to carry?
What am I doing out of alignment instead of purpose?
What would my life look like if I stopped surviving and started living intentionally?
Freedom is not just about leaving physical spaces.
Sometimes freedom is emotional.
Sometimes it’s mental.
Sometimes freedom looks like finally giving yourself permission to become someone different.
Healing Is Part of Legacy Too
As I continue reflecting on my own journey, one thing has become very clear:
Healing matters.
Not just for me—but for the generations connected to me.
For a long time, legacy was often defined by survival:
Working hard. Sacrificing. Enduring.
But I believe part of legacy is also:
emotional wellness
self-awareness
healing
alignment
peace
What if the next generation didn’t just inherit our strength…but also inherited our healing?

A Reflection for June
As we honor Juneteenth and reflect on freedom this month, I want to leave you with this question:
What are you still carrying that freedom is asking you to release?
Maybe it’s fear.
Maybe it’s guilt.
Maybe it’s survival mode itself.
Whatever it is, don’t ignore it.
Because sometimes the greatest form of freedom…is finally allowing yourself to put something down.
Conclusion
Freedom looks different when you’ve survived so much.
It becomes softer.
More intentional.
More honest.
It’s no longer about proving strength to the world.
It’s about creating a life that no longer requires you to constantly recover from it.
This June, don’t just celebrate freedom historically. Reflect on it personally.
Because you deserve more than survival.
You deserve freedom too.
